Nothing will change for veteran swingman Denzel Valentine despite now being traded to the New York Knicks as part of the Cleveland Cavaliers-Los Angeles Lakers deal for Rajon Rondo.

Initially, the Cavs were supposed to send Valentine to the Lakers for Rondo. The Purple and Gold, meanwhile, had planned to waive him in order to clear a roster spot. In the reworked deal, the Knicks acquire the 28-year-old while the Los Angeles franchise gets the draft rights to Louis Labeyri.

The Knicks are also getting the rights to Brad Newley and Wang Zhelin along with cash.

However, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic, the Knicks have no plans to keep Valentine and are also planning to waive him.

That means Denzel Valentine will be a free agent and allowed to sign with any team after he clears waivers.

The former NBA lottery pick has yet to play in meaningful games this season after largely being a second-string or third-string player for the Cavs. He just averaged 9.3 minutes per game with Cleveland this 2021-22, putting up 2.9 points and 1.7 rebounds.

It remains to be seen if Valentine will garner enough interest in the free agent market, but with the recent surge in signing replacement players due to COVID-19, he could find a chance to prove himself in a team needing some bodies.
