He may not hog the headlines as much as his former Duke teammate Zion Williamson, but RJ Barrett is silently putting up impressive numbers to start his NBA career with the New York Knicks

The 19-year-old Canadian etched himself to the Knicks’ record books on Monday by becoming the first rookie in 40 years to produce at least 15 points, 15 rebounds and five assists in a game for the franchise

The last first-year Knicks player to ever produce such stat-line was Bill Cartwright way back on Dec. 14, 1979, according to Justin Kobatko.

Barrett logged in a team-high 40 minutes in the Knicks’ 105-98 victory over the Chicago Bulls. He was instrumental for New York in ending a three-game skid to start their 2019-20 campaign.

He eclipsed the 20-point scoring mark twice already in his first four games. Barret dropped 21 points against the San Antonio Spurs on an efficient 9-for-13 shooting from the field in the Knicks’ opener, and he scored 26 markers (4-for-6 from deep) against the Boston Celtics.

His versatility and well-rounded skills have allowed Barrett to comfortably spend time at the shooting guard and small forward position. He has even directed the offense for coach David Fizdale in multiple stretches.

Barrett was chosen third overall in this year’s draft, two picks below Williamson and Ja Morant. Williamson is expected to be a cut above the rest once he returns from a knee injury, while Morant finally showed his true capabilities in the Memphis Grizzlies' victory over the Brooklyn Nets.

It’s still too early to tell, but Barrett might just be the dark horse pick for the Rookie of the Year plum this season if he maintains his production.
