New York Knicks fans have had a longstanding dream about signing both Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving this summer, but things have certainly taken a turn over the last month or so.

With Durant tearing his Achilles in the NBA Finals and Irving apparently having his sights set on the Brooklyn Nets, the Knicks may end up signing neither player this summer, and team president Steve Mills is urging the New York faithful to be patient:

“We’re asking them to continue to be patient,” said Mills, according Tim Bontemps of ESPN. “We laid out a plan that … we are going to build this team the right way. We are going to be diligent and not take any shortcuts, and follow a process.”

Of course, given how the Knicks have proceeded this season, fans may not be too happy with that quote.

Back in January, New York traded young big man Kristaps Porzingis—the jewel of the franchise—in order to free up enough cap space to sign two max free agents this summer.

Now, to be fair to the Knicks, Porzingis wanted out, but it seems like New York had plans of letting Porzingis walk regardless of whether or not he asked to be traded.

The Knicks won just 17 games this season, equaling their lowest win total in franchise history. New York has also missed the playoffs six years in a row, last qualifying for the postseason in 2013 when it won its first playoff series since 2001.

Taking all of that into consideration, Knicks fans may feel like they have been patient enough.
