The New York Knicks are laser-focused on trading for Donovan Mitchell from the Utah Jazz, but they have to be ready to part ways with at least four first-round picks to make that happen.

NBA insider Marc Stein recently joined Tony Jones of The Athletic on Spotify Live to discuss the Mitchell trade situation. While no deal is imminent between the Knicks and Jazz, Stein noted that he sees the deal getting done eventually. He also shared his belief that both teams are just trying to “figure out a median that the can come to.”

In terms of the number of picks the Jazz can get from New York, Stein expressed belief that it will not be lower than four. However, five picks is likely the “sweet spot” that could convince the Jazz to pull the trigger on the deal.

Considering that the Jazz got four first-rounders and a pick swap from the Minnesota Timberwolves for Rudy Gobert, four to five picks for Donovan Mitchell seem just about right.

Sure the Timberwolves overpaid for Gobert, but it is worth noting Mitchell is only 25 years old and has plenty of upside. With that, he can definitely command that much picks.

Unfortunately, fans might have to wait for a little bit more to see the trade happen. As reported earlier, Utah is not rushing to trade their superstar guard. Meanwhile, even though New York wants the All-Star, they are said to be adamant on not giving up and end up overpaying for him as well.
