Los Angeles Lakers tickets have typically been a hot item, but now that future Hall of Famer LeBron James has arrived in Hollywood, the demand for them is off the charts.
Cody Benjamin of CBS Sports has reports that not only is the Lakers' opener in Portland on Oct 18. StubHub's top-selling game, but the demand for Lakers tickets has increased by 427 percent from last season. LeBron's affect on ticket prices was immediate upon his move:
On July 1, the same day James left the Cleveland Cavaliers for the Lakers, TickPick saw its get-in price for the team's preseason opener more than double and estimated a 60-percent increase in the cost of an average regular-season Lakers ticket — making LeBron's new team the most expensive to see in all of basketball. Within hours, StubHub began listing Lakers home-opener tickets at $545 after selling admission to Los Angeles' first 2017-18 home game for as low as $60.
This isn't the first time LeBron has greatly increased a team's popularity and ticket sales. When he moved back to Cleveland from his stint with the Miami Heat, ticket sales in Cleveland reached new heights.
StubHub spokesperson Cameron Papp explained at the time:
“At StubHub, we have seen Cavs ticket demand steadily increase each season since LeBron returned, which is a real testament to his star power. There are only a few athletes in all of the sports world who can sway ticket demand, both home and away, as he can.”
