During his introductory press conference on Monday, new Los Angeles Lakers head coach Frank Vogel explained how he plans to build the offense and defense.

Vogel said the offense will be built outside-in, using 3-point shooting and spacing to set up attacking the basket. He says the defense will be built inside-out, protecting the paint first followed by limiting 3-point shooting.

The Lakers have the best slasher in the game in LeBron James. Whenever James puts his head down and attacks the basket, the defense collapses on him and frees up shooters for wide open looks from beyond the arc.

The problem, though, is that the Lakers don't have enough reliable shooting on the roster. Management has to surround LeBron with more shooters if the Lakers want to be a better team in 2019-20. After James signed with Los Angeles last summer, the franchise signed Rajon Rondo, Lance Stephenson, Michael Beasley and JaVale McGee. Those were inefficient moves made by Rob Pelinka and Magic Johnson.

When Vogel was head coach of the Indiana Pacers, his teams always had one of the best defenses in the NBA. In the rugged Western Conference, the Lakers have to be able to stop other teams from scoring if they intend to compete for a playoff spot next season.
