The Los Angeles Lakers used a surge in the fourth quarter in Game 2 on Sunday to secure a much-needed victory over the Houston Rockets. After the win, Lakers superstars LeBron James and Anthony Davis both opened up about their mindset during the pivotal final frame.

For LeBron, he knew he had to take over during that crucial juncture of the contest:

“A.D. is on the bench, and my teammates looked to me to try to be aggressive, either getting myself shots or getting my teammates shots,” James said, via Bill Oram of The Athletic. “And I got an opportunity to see a couple seams. I was able to attack the rim and also find a couple guys as well.”

The Rockets were coming off a huge third quarter in which they outscored the Lakers in dominant fashion, 41-23. Houston was so impressive to come all the way back from a 21-point second-quarter deficit. The Rockets were up by two points entering the fourth, and the Lakers were in danger of losing the first two games of the series.

James came out firing to start the fourth quarter, which set the tone for the Lakers for the rest of the game. Davis explained how going down in a big hole wasn't on their minds at all:

“We’re not in that situation thinking we can be down 0-2 if we lose this game,” Davis said. “Our mindset is how do we win this game, and we came out with a defensive mindset. Getting back to that defensive mindset we had in the first half and limit their 3 attempts and also, when we get stops run in transition, play our style of basketball.”

The Lakers exhibited their defensive chops down the stretch, holding the Rockets to just 17 points in the final frame and scoring 27 of their own. Rajon Rondo also played a key role and Lakers head coach Frank Vogel was appreciative of LeBron James going into “attack mode.”

This was an important win for the Lakers, who are now looking to make it two straight, with Game 3 scheduled for Tuesday.
