The Los Angeles Lakers suffered yet another injury setback on Wednesday, as Anthony Davis sprained his right ankle in the team's stirring victory over the Utah Jazz — their final game before the All-Star break.

Davis' ankle bent 90 degrees when he came down on Rudy Gobert's heel while attempting to catch a lob in the second quarter. He writhed in agony on the ground for several minutes. The Lakers medical staff brought out a stretcher, but Davis limped towards the tunnel with the help of DeAndre Jordan and Dwight Howard.

Once he got there, he had to be carried by Howard and Jordan to the locker room.

“Obviously it's sickening to see AD go down in that fashion,” LeBron James said. “I hope he's fine. Obviously, I mean, I know he's not like, great, but obviously his health is most important for him individually, for our ballclub…I just wish him the best.”

LeBron added that he saw AD on crutches at halftime.

Davis underwent X-rays which came back negative for a fracture. The Lakers officially diagnosed him with a sprain and said he would be re-evaluated after the All-Star break. ESPN's Dave McMenamin reported he's expected to be out “at least” two weeks.

The Lakers next play on Feb. 25. They have 24 games remaining in their season. Frank Vogel confirmed postgame that Davis would receive an MRI on Thursday.

Vogel also saw Davis after the incident, who Vogel said was understandably despondent.

“Just shaking his head about, you know, really everything,” Vogel said. “Obviously I'm not sure what it felt like, but just being frustrated about it looking like he's going to miss some time again.”

Vogel acknowledged the Lakers were initially deflated but credited Russell Westbrook for juicing up his teammates in timeouts until their fourth-quarter surge.

“It’s been like this all year,” Westbrook said about the emotional roller-coaster of the Lakers' 2021-22 season. “The most important part is AD is healthy and his spirits are right. And hopefully it’s not that bad and he’ll be back. But until then, we have to hold it down.”

Davis is averaging 23.3 points, 9.9 rebounds, 1.2 steals, and 2.3 blocks in 36 games this season. He's averaged 23.2 points, 10.1 rebounds, and 3.2 blocks since returning on Jan. 25 from a 17-game absence due to a sprained left MCL. LeBron, Davis, and Russell Westbrook have played just 20 games together.

AD played 36 of 72 games in 2020-21 due to various lower leg injuries. LeBron missed 20 games last season with a severe ankle sprain, which he said took well into the summer to fully heal.

Vogel was asked about the Lakers strategy without Davis: “Win games until we get him back.”
