Following the debut of the “Ball in the Family” Facebook docu-series centered around the Ball Family last month, one of the biggest topics of discussions was Los Angeles Lakers rookie Lonzo Ball discrediting legendary rapper Nas as not being real Hip Hop but rather Migos and Future are now the genre.

The 19-year-old has since caught much flak for his comments that have seen many verbally bash him including Nas' own manager. With that in mind, Ball finally clarified his comments during an interview on Friday with ESPNLA 710's Marcellus Wiley and Kelvin Washington. (h/t Kyle Neubeck of Complex)

“They told me that the goal for the next two months was (to get me to listen) to real hip-hop, I replied that's not gon' happen, and the first person who popped into my head was Nas, because obviously he's real hip-hop,” Ball said.

“So I'm like, nobody listens to Nas no more, which I think is true, because of my friends ain't nobody bumping Nas no more, no disrespect to him. He had his time, I just think it's a new time. And then the next question was, what is real hip-hop to you? And I said real hip-hop is Future and Migos, so that's how it all went down.”

Ball took the chance to back track a bit on his comments by showing his respect to Nas, but at the same time made it clear that his generation no longer listens to his music. It is a completely different era of Hip Hop that doesn't focus so much on the lyricism skills.

It isn't any way bashing Nas, but showing the change in times of how Hip Hop has evolved for better or worse. There is a less importance on generating much centered around the lyrical content in the genre. This further shows that this is an entirely new era of hip hop that has nothing to do with the type of music Nas produced.
