Despite the 11-20 record after losing to the Portland Trail Blazers, there is great optimism for the Los Angeles Lakers. After a difficult stretch against the Cleveland Cavaliers, Golden State Warriors (twice), and Houston Rockets, the young Lakers showed they could compete against championship contenders.

Following the 95-92 loss at Staples Center, head coach Luke Walton revealed his message through 31 games of the 2017-18 NBA season.

“The difference is earlier in the year, I was telling our guys it doesn't matter if we win or lose,” Walton said. “It's how we're playing. It's building our habits, but I told them today they’ve set an expectation and a standard for themselves that I now believe they are ready to win ball games.”

As the Lakers are trying to build the right way, these type of losses against the Blazers who were without Damian Lillard hurt. However, for the first time since the team started the rebuilding process, Los Angeles is consistently competitive and it will eventually pay off.

For the Lakers, the challenge will be staying in the moment and not looking ahead. While the trade rumors will ramp up as the February trade deadline nears, it is important they continue to stay composed and develop.
