Back in February 2017, the Los Angeles Lakers named Magic Johnson their president of basketball operations. Just a little over two years later, Johnson decided to resign from the position.

Now, the Lakers have eliminated the job altogether.

According to Arash Markazi of the Los Angeles Times, Los Angeles has gotten rid of the team president position, which Rob Pelinka claimed was created specifically for Johnson.

Johnson stunned the basketball world when he stepped down from the position right before the end of the regular season, citing backstabbing as a big reason as for why he decided to call it quits.

Things certainly were not supposed to turn out this way for the Lakers.

After signing LeBron James last summer, Los Angeles had big plans, but the first major blow came when no other big-name free agents decided to join James. The Lakers also struck out on trading for Kawhi Leonard, which was another hit.

Los Angeles then struggled throughout the regular season, dealing with injuries, inconsistency and a whole lot of locker room friction thanks to the Anthony Davis drama.

The Lakers ended up winning just 37 games and missing the playoffs, marking the first time a LeBron-led team failed to qualify for the postseason since James' second year in the league back in 2005.

Los Angeles then parted ways with head coach Luke Walton at the conclusion of the season and replaced him with Frank Vogel, whom the Lakers introduced at a press conference on Monday.
