Fans have been clamoring for the world-class Lionel Messi the sport has known for years to finally make a statement performance at Paris Saint-Germain.

Needless to say, the primary reason Lionel Messi was signed by PSG is to help the club position itself to become world champions. However, this has not been the case thus far.

Contrary to what was expected, Messi is still yet to put his stamp on PSG after playing three games with the French side.

Having checked in as a sub on the 66th minute, it was quite understandable that the Argentine will have minimal impact in his PSG debut against Reims. However, the expectation shot up when Messi made his first start for Mauricio Pochettino in the club’s UEFA Champions League opener against Club Brugge on Wednesday.

Messi played the entire 90 minutes for PSG, but still, it was evident that his presence on the pitch wasn’t really much of a difference.

Effortwise, the former Barcelona talisman ticked the box as he was seen doing his best to complete a couple of sensational plays in the first 45 minutes of the game. However, that was pretty much it for Messi as he eventually struggled in the second half, even picking up a yellow card on the 72nd-minute.

Though Messi himself is not complaining, the frustration could be felt as it appeared as if his PSG teammates were reluctant to back him up in his attempts to work his magic on the pitch.

At one play during the draw against Club Brugge, the six-time Ballon d’Or winner, like he usually does throughout his illustrious career, can be seen prepping up to attack with the ball. However, fans noticed that other PSG players on the field didn’t have the same amount of energy as Messi and were seen just standing behind him, seemingly watching idly.

As a result, what could have been a spectacular attack ended up as nothing and Messi was forced to just do a sidekick pass.

The said play speaks highly of what some PSG players feel about playing alongside a legendary player like Messi. Though it’s a bit early to conclude, it is becoming apparent that some in Pochettino’s squad still can’t seem to figure out how to efficiently co-exist with the left-footed soccer icon.

As it stands, Messi will be making his PSG home debut on Sunday when the club takes on its Ligue 1 rivals Lyon at the Parc des Princes stadium.

The Ligue 1 match will mark Messi’r first home game with the Parisians since his shocking free transfer from Barcelona.

Much like PSG’s hope to extend its flawless French top flight start this season, Messi will also “hope to wow” fans by finally making his mark on his new team.

While everyone is holding their breath, Pochettino revealed that Messi, on the other hand, is just “calm and composed” ahead of the match.

“He is happy to be able to make his debut at the Parc des Princes in front of his fans tomorrow, he is calm and composed,” Pochettino told reporters in press conference on Saturday.

“But so is the whole team,” he added. “Everyone is thinking about putting in the best performance possible, our goal is to win this game.”
