LSU basketball is mourning the loss of one of their own. Former Tigers player Josh Maravich passed away at the age of 42, per the school. Josh was the son of former star player Pete Maravich, known to the world as Pistol Pete.

Josh played for LSU basketball from 2001-2005. He stated he had always wanted to come and play for the same school as his dad.

“I wanted to come here for my dad to make him proud,” Josh Maravich said in a 2005 article in the LSU school paper, The Daily Reveille. “I knew I wasn’t going to be a star player, but for me being a walk-on was what I always wanted to do.”

The LSU basketball program honored Josh Maravich in a social media post following his passing.

The cause of death has not been released. He passed away at his home, per the school. Josh Maravich played a large role in getting a statue built for his father Pete at LSU. Pete Maravich is enshrined at the school, alongside other LSU basketball greats Shaquille O' Neal, Bob Pettit and Seimone Augustus.

Josh was a star high school basketball player, before coming to LSU basketball. He scored more than 1,000 points in high school, per Sports Illustrated. He averaged 18 points, four rebounds, four assists and three steals a game in his final season of high school basketball. Josh largely played the role of a reserve at LSU, playing for former coach John Brady.

Funeral arrangements will be made at a later date.

Pete Maravich's career at LSU

Josh's father Pete was one of the best college basketball players to ever take the court. Pete Maravich finished his college career at LSU basketball, scoring more than 3,660 points. Pete held the NCAA Division I college basketball scoring record until this past season, when Caitlin Clark surpassed it at Iowa women's basketball. Pete played for LSU basketball from 1967-1970, and held the scoring record for more than 50 years. Clark finished her college career with 3,951 points. Pete remains the highest scorer in men's basketball, and his record may never be broken.

Tragically, Pete also passed away at a young age. He died at the age of 40 from a heart condition that had not been detected, per the Associated Press. He played in the NBA from 1970-1980. He spent time with the Boston Celtics, Atlanta Hawks and the New Orleans/Utah Jazz. Pete was a 5-time NBA All-Star and was the league scoring champion in 1977. Pete died in 1988, when Josh was only six years old.

LSU basketball fans everywhere are sending their condolences to the Maravich family at this difficult time. Josh is survived by his mother, stepfather and brother.
