Report: Luis Suárez expected to leave Barcelona in next few days

Luis Suarez

Barcelona forward Luis Suárez is expected to leave the club in the next few days as a result of the fallout from an 8-2 Champions League quarterfinal defeat to Bayern Munich, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Catalans have reportedly received a $17.8 million offer from Ajax last week, which could bring Luis Suárez to his former team. According to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona could use Suárez to reel in Donny van de Beek, hoping to reduce the latter’s transfer fee around €20 million (£18 million/$24 million).

While the offer is nearly half of his valuation, the Blaugranes will need to evaluate if this is a fair transfer offer, considering the Uruguay international has seen his scoring drop precipitously in the past four seasons and will be 34 years old by the time the next season starts.

The Uruguay international was a sensation during the Messi-Suarez-Neymar days, cracking 40 goals and 18 assists during league play in 2015-16, but his acumen for goal has since deterred.

Suárez followed that 2015-16 season with 29, 25, 21, and most recently a mere 16 goals in each of the last four La Liga campaigns.

Barcelona is determined to start fresh with a retooled squad around Lionel Messi. That much is what new manager Ronald Koeman is promising.

Luis Suárez was not been mentioned by president Josep Maria Bartomeu as part of the seven “untouchables,” which puts him in potential risk to leave the club sooner than later as transfer rumors heat up. According to Romano, Barcelona would be ready to sell him if they receive an “important bid.”

Barcelona will have to take some losses to transform the team’s look, considering most of their players are aging or past their prime. The Catalans could wind up getting back a mere half of what they spent for their high-ticket players, all while trying to make timely acquisitions to surround Lionel Messi and help revamp a struggling squad.
