Things could've gone better for Jamahl Mosley in his first season as coach of the Orlando Magic. They finished with a measly 22-60 record, second-worst in the NBA behind the Houston Rockets.

Still, Mosley should be proud. He has truly come a long way since being an unknown journeyman player, suiting up for obscure teams around the world. He started his NBA coaching career, albeit accidentally when he bumped into then-Denver Nuggets assistant coach John Welch in 2005. Mosley joined the Nuggets as a volunteer, helping with player workouts with the likes of Carmelo Anthony and Kenyon Martin.

But because of the setup, according to a story by The Undefeated's Marc J. Spears, Mosley wasn't actually earning money. He was driving a 1994 Chevrolet Caprice at that time. That's when then-Nuggets coach George Karl stepped in.

“George was like, ‘Here.’ He wrote me a check for $2,500 to help make sure I was OK. He was like, ‘I know it’s tough and you’re trying to get on,’ and he took care of me there. And I didn’t have a job.”

Since then, Mosley has been nothing but grateful for his NBA career. After five years with the Nuggets, he had productive stints with the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Dallas Mavericks before getting hired to call the shots for the Magic.

The Magic may not have won a lot of games this season, but Mosley knows it's just a start.

“The biggest triumph was seeing the growth of these young players. Seeing their confidence level soar knowing that they belong and can have a level of success with the work that we have put in.”

Hard not to root for a guy like Mosley.
