The Dallas Mavericks are hoping to clinch a series win over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Thursday in Game 5 of the Western Conference Finals. With Dallas leading the series 3-1, Timberwolves head coach Chris Finch took a shot at the Mavs before the game.

Finch was asked about Anthony Edwards' defense before tip-off on Thursday. The Timberwolves head coach then called out Dallas for setting “illegal screens,” via Brad Townsend of the Dallas Morning News.

“He does a good job of getting through all those illegal screens they set for Luka,” Finch said.

There were some words exchanged between the teams in Game 4. Timberwolves center Rudy Gobert and Luka Doncic have gone back-and-forth at times, with Gobert playing physical defense on Doncic while guarding him because of a switch. Luka of course hit a game-winner over Gobert early in the series.

The Timberwolves had Jaden McDaniels as Doncic's primary defender early in the series, but Finch clearly likes how Edwards is guarding the Mavs star. His comments before Game 5 will likely catch Dallas' attention. It could work as another source of motivation for the Mavs. Of course, Dallas is already motivated to take care of business and earn a series victory on Thursday.

Mavericks receive good news before Game 5

Dallas entered Thursday with question marks. Both Luka Doncic (knee, ankle) and Dereck Lively II (neck) were questionable with injuries. It was revealed before tip-off that both players are available for Game 5, however.

Lively missed Game 4 with a neck sprain. Dallas was hopeful he'd be able to return, but there was uncertainty around the situation. Fortunately, Lively will return and should play an impactful role as Dallas looks to clinch a spot in the NBA Finals.

Doncic has been listed as questionable and probable in multiple games during the NBA playoffs. Yet, he has not missed a contest. Barring a major setback, most people expected Luka to play on Thursday.

The Mavs are entering Game 5 ready to go. Almost all of their players are available and Dallas is looking to bounce back following the Game 4 defeat.

Perhaps Chris Finch's comments will add extra fuel to the fire as Dallas eyes an NBA Finals appearance.
