Mavs news: Dennis Smith Jr. thinks him and Luka Doncic will play well together

Mavs young superstar talent Dennis Smith Jr. believes he and Luka Doncic will play more than well together, helping Dallas return to dominance.

The Dallas Mavericks went all in on European wonder kid Luka Doncic at the 2018 NBA draft, as they look build a foundation in the hopes of again challenging for an NBA championship in the future. With the acquisition of Doncic, the 19-year-old will now team up with explosive guard Dennis Smith Jr. in the backcourt, and Smith believes the pair will work very well together.

“It should be good. I’ve watched a lot of tape on him. I never got into the gym with him, but I watched a lot of tape and I believe that we could complement one another.”

The Mavericks find themselves looking towards the future, as legendary power forward Dirk Nowitzki is nearing the end of his career. The German-born iconic scorer has signed a one-year deal with the organisation, but this is more than likely his last go-around as his illustrious careers winds down. For this upcoming season, it will be his job to guide the young stars, and Nowitzki is a perfect mentor for both Smith Jr and Doncic.

Nowitzki will prove a pivotal role model and example for especially Doncic, who both share the common ground of once being foreigners making their way to American shores. The 40-year-old will no doubt show Doncic the ropes, and fast track his development and adjustment period.

With the acquisition of Doncic, all of a sudden the Mavericks have one of the more exciting young cores and well-balanced rosters in the entire league. Doncic and Smith Jr will make up the backcourt, Harrison Barnes and Wesley Matthews will take turns occupying the wing, and newly acquired defensive dynamo Deandre Jordan will take care of the frontcourt alongside Nowitzki.

The Mavericks are slowly but surely building a roster worthy of contending in the not-so-distant future. They also acquired Kostas Antetokounmpo on draft night, the younger brother of Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo to add to their growing depth of talent.

After undergoing consecutive disappointing seasons, it looks like the franchise is taking the necessary steps in order to have a successful future, and Doncic and Smith Jr will be the cornerstones of it.
