Shams Charania broke the news on a new twist on Dallas Mavericks center Kristaps Porizingis' new contract: The Unicorn's extension will include a player option for his final season under contract in 2023:

This gives Porzingis the power to become an unrestricted free agent in 2023 if he feels the need to test free agency waters or simply wants out of Dallas.

The Mavs are counting on Porzingis to come back full strength after tearing his left ACL. The injury has cost him nearly a season and a half. The 7'3 center has not played since February of 2018.

Depending on how Porzingis returns from the devastating injury, this could either be a solid contract or a nightmare situation for the Mavs. Assuming that Porzingis returns at full strength, the Mavericks could quickly become a contender by building around a core of the Latvian big man and Luka Doncic.

However, it is rare that players of this height come back from such terrible injuries the same as before. It's likely that we see at least a small drop in Porzingis' numbers when he returns to suit up for the Mavs.

Even with the expected drop, he will still be an excellent player and a piece to build around. Mavs fans around the world will keep an eye on his progress and hope he can help Doncic and the rest of the team contend this season.
