Luka Doncic just picked up a suspension at literally the worst possible time for the Dallas Mavericks. With just one game left on the year, he'll be forced to sit out after picking up his 16th technical of the season.
Check out the moment that disqualified the Mavs star for their final game against the San Antonio Spurs:
With Dallas owning the tie-breaker over the Golden State Warriors, finishing the season with a tie would be enough to propel them to the 3rd seed. While it's debatable whether you'd rather face the Utah Jazz or the Denver Nuggets in the first round, what's not up for question is trying to avoid the Phoenix Suns until the Western Conference Finals.
Whichever team gets the 3rd seed is guaranteed that luxury and likely face the talented, but less playoff tested Memphis Grizzlies in the second round.
One added consideration for the Mavs is the potential return of Tim Hardaway Jr., who suffered a foot injury that he's still trying to recover from. The further they get into the postseason, the greater the likelihood that he's able to return before the season is over for Dallas.
Luka Doncic has often been criticized for his overtly expressive complaining towards referees. Whether or not this suspension impacts their playoff positioning, the Mavs star needs to take this lesson to heart as not to let his emotions interfere with the talent he brings for his team.
