Contrary to a prior report, the Dallas Mavericks are not the “secret promise” suitor for big man Al Horford, according to Mike Fisher of 247Sports and Marc Stein of The New York Times.

The initial report from Monday claimed that the LA Clippers, New Orleans Pelicans and Mavs were willing to make Horford a massive offer after he opted out of the $30.1 million last season of his contract with the Boston Celtics.

Two days later, news that the Pelicans were not chasing after Horford came through, now making that two out of three franchises not in contention for the All-Star big man, contrary to Ric Bucher's original report.

Lately, the Philadelphia 76ers and Sacramento Kings have arisen as potential candidates for his services.

Some even speculated the Mavs could give Horford a four-year, $112 million deal, one that would carry him until age 37.

There is plenty of smoke when it comes to the versatile big man's potential destination, yet one thing rings clear among them all: Horford is looking for a long-term deal, one neighboring the $100 million mark and four years of commitment. An understandable bar, considering this is likely his very last chance to net a strong commitment from an NBA franchise.

Despite his age, Horford has proven to hold his own defensively, while still starring as a playmaking big who can rebound, find the open man and score at all three levels — giving whoever lands him an excellent, well-rounded veteran who is expected to age gracefully with his sound skillset.

However, that apparently won't be the Mavericks.
