Jerome Max Keli'i Holloway was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, on December 4, 1991, and was raised in the area of Waianae — a place known for fist fighting. His father, Mark Holloway, on the other hand, left their family when Max was around 11 years old.
He started to train in kickboxing when he was 15 years old as a sophomore in high school. He fought under Team Ruthless and he won his first amateur bout after only three days of training. He then graduated from Waianae High School in 2010.
In his first official fights, Max Holloway went undefeated and he gained recognition as the No. 7 featherweight prospect of 2012 in Bloody Elbow’s 2012 World MMA Scouting Report.
