A24 shocked fans by premiering Ti West's Maxxxine, the third entry in the X series. The Mia Goth movie premiered.
On Thursday, June 20, A24 was supposed to present a double feature of X and Pearl, the previous two movies in the series. After X, West shocked fans during the Q&A in between screenings.
After asking the sold-out crowd if they had seen Pearl (most raised their hands, per The Hollywood Reporter), Lily Collins asked why they should watch the prequel instead of Maxxxine.
“You're going to be the first to see this movie,” West added, leading the audience to cheer.
He just had one condition for the surprise: “Just don't spoil it.”
Praise for Maxxxine in first reactions
This comes a couple of weeks before A24 releases the movie on July 5. Some critics were in attendance and weighed in after seeing it and praised Ti West's Maxxxine.
Lon Harris compared Maxxxine to Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
“A glorious, epic salute to the history of cinematic LA sleaze in all of its forms, like an '80s horror take on Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” Harris said. “A few of the loudest pops I've heard from a theater audience in a while.”
Perri Nemiroff of Collider also had praise for the movie, calling it “one of my absolute favorites out there.”
“Because I know many are bound to ask — I can't rank X, Pearl, and Maxxxine for you because I love them all, and they're all so distinct,” Nemiroff explained. “There's no doubt I'll be most in the mood for one on one day and a different one the next, and I think that's a beautiful thing.”
Eric Goldman loved the movie's “style change” similar to how Pearl diverted from X. “This is just one kick ass horror trilogy!” Goldman praised.
A24 and Ti West's X trilogy
Ti West began the X trilogy in 2022. The A24 movie grossed nearly $15 million which is a huge win for the indie studio. In a surprise move, West and star Goth co-wrote and shot a prequel, Pearl.
Pearl was released a few months later and grossed nearly $10 million at the box office. Goth played dual roles in X, a young aspiring actress named Maxine Minx and an older woman named Pearl. Obviously, the prequel follows the latter character as she takes a violent turn after failing to become an actress.
Maxxxine will follow Goth as Maxine as she heads to Hollywood. While there, there is a killer on the loose dubbed the Night Stalker. Elizabeth Debicki, Moses Sumney, Michelle Monaghan, and Bobby Cannavale will star in the movie. Halsey, Lily Collins, Giancarlo Esposito, Sophie Thatcher, and Kevin Bacon will also appear in it.
Mia Goth has made a name for herself in the X trilogy. Earlier in her career, she starred in movies such as The Survivalist, High Life, Suspiria, and Emma. She also starred in Infinity Pool. Coming up, she will star in Frankenstein by Guillermo del Toro and is attached to star in the MCU's Blade movie.
