The New York Mets got off to the 2022 season on the right foot. They took down the Washington Nationals 5-1 thanks to a 12-hit outburst from the team and a dominant start on the mound from Tylor Megill, who struck out six batters and allowed no runs through the first five innings.

The night could have taken a sharp turn in the ninth inning. In the top of the inning, Pete Alonso took a pitch from Mason Thompson to the shoulder that bounced up and hit his face. The Mets star, who recorded two hits in the victory, was removed from the game. He was the second New York player to be hit by a pitch, as catcher James McCann was hit twice.

After the Mets' win, Alonso said that he was all good. He underwent concussion protocol and his lip swelled but he insisted that he was a-okay.

Alonso shaking off the pitch to the face is no surprise. New York's star first baseman and his wife got into a scary car accident during Spring Training but made it back to the field just two days afterward. Mets manager Buck Showalter joked about Alonso's lips, though also added that he was not happy with multiple players of his being hit by pitches.

New York faces Washington again tonight. Max Scherzer will make his Mets debut against his former team.
