NBA head coaches Mike D'Antoni of the Houston Rockets and Alvin Gentry of the New Orleans Pelicans were not a fan of the league's possible mandate when the 2019-20 regular season resumes on July 31.

As per Commissioner Adam Silver, coaches aged 65 and up will be forced to wear face masks during games. The NBA executive also hinted at the possibility of not allowing these coaches to be at the bench at all.

D'Antoni and Gentry were quick to point out that all coaches must be required to do so, regardless of their age, per ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

“I am sure they want to keep everyone safe, but to start singling people out with more risk, well, I would hope they wouldn’t want to get into that,” the Rockets bench boss said on Thursday
The NBA's return to action is indeed great news for basketball fans, but it does come with several complexities. Most of the recorded fatalities from the COVID-19 virus came from the elderly population and from those with pre-existing medical conditions.
The Centers for Disease Controls (CDC) singled out that those 65 years old and above are the most at risk. This affects the NBA dearly, considering that several prominent coaches are above that age.
D'Antoni is 69 years old, while Gentry is 65. San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich is currently the oldest active head coach at 71. Meanwhile, the NBA still has over a month to iron out its policies for the continuance of the season.
The safety of everyone involved will indeed be of paramount importance, and imposing every head coach to wear face masks seem to be the right choice moving forward.
