The Los Angeles Angels’ early season woes continued on Thursday, as they dropped both games of their road doubleheader against the New York Yankees.
The Angels mustered up a mere one run scored in the opener, and in the latter game of the doubleheader, they did not have a single hitter reach base until the eighth inning. In the end, the Angels combined to leave 14 on base and hit 2-10 with runners in scoring position over the two contests.
It was just on May 24 that the Angels were 10 games over .500 and were also right in the thick of the AL West race with the Houston Astros. But after losing eight straight contests, Joe Maddon’s club is now in danger of dropping out of the AL wild-card race.
From Angels center fielder Mike Trout’s standpoint, as he noted after the three-game series against the Yankees, he sees that his team simply needs to “turn the page.”
“We’re just going through a rough stretch,” Trout said. “Guys are working, but things just aren’t going our way. We just have to keep working and turn the page.”
Trout had a series to forget against the current AL East leaders, as he failed to record a hit and reached base just twice in 12 plate appearances over the trio of contests.
The Angels are now set for a three-game road series against the Philadelphia Phillies beginning on Friday. Both teams sure are in need of a lengthy winning streak at this point in the season.
