In lieu of the recent controversy surrounding the LIV Golf Invitational Series, it seems that the PGA is starting to lose its top-talent and the zest it once had in the professional golf realm. This is especially true after big name players like Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson, Sergio Garcia, and Kevin Na decided to pull out of the PGA to join the rival golf league.
As a result, this has caused a ton of turn of turmoil and tension that's started to mount. Considering that LIV has come out of left field with a series of big offerings, these recent occurrences have put off a lot of folks. This is mainly due to the fact that some of their marquee competitors have jumped ship rather quickly. With all this drama in the works, let's now discuss the three reasons LIV Golf is starting to dampen the PGA pipeline.
Reasons LIV Golf is poisoning PGA watering hole
1. The PGA has lost some of it's best golfers
Led by PGA veterans Mickelson and Johnson, a grand total of 17 players have now left the PGA to play in the LIV Golf Tournament. Their involvement in the LIV Invitational Series has earned them an indefinite ban from the PGA. They've also been forbidden to compete in The Ryder Cup.
These are truly unfortunate circumstances for the PGA as they've lost some of their top players to the rival golf league. Especially with LIV striking deals with several broadcasters including DAZN, DirecTV, L'Equipe, and Sina Sports throughout 150 countries and territories. This will likely lead to more superstars turning their backs on the PGA and joining LIV.
2. LIV Golf has paid big money for it's players
LIV wasn't shy about doling out massive amounts of cash to reel in the best golfers money could buy. With some players getting paid up to $100 million to join the tournament, it just further goes to show that money really can attract some of the biggest names. Add to this the fact that the prize for the tournament will be bigger than any in PGA history with a grand total of $4 million and a minimum payout for finishers of $120,000.
To say that professional golfers are going to earn big in this league would be a grave understatement. It may disappointing to see some of the PGA's top performers bounce for LIV on a whim, but with these kind of earnings it's also very easy to see why they did this in an instant. With major payouts and more earning opportunities like this at upcoming tournaments, LIV has officially poisoned the PGA watering hole. Whether or not they'll be able to retain these guys in the long haul still remains to be seen.
In the interim though, things are looking bleak for the PGA and they'll definitely have their work cut out for them as they work tirelessly to keep pace with the inaugural LIV Golf Invitational Series. Just when things were as good as they could possibly be for the PGA, LIV swooped right in and pulled the rug from under them.
