Adam Wainwright has a 3.06 ERA. As he nears the end of his sterling big-league career, one of the best Cardinals of the 21st century can still get the job done. However, it is worth noting that the Brewers have recently been a thorn in his side. Milwaukee has roughed up Waino in his two previous starts against the Brew Crew this season. Milwaukee has tagged the Cardinal starter for eight runs on 18 hits in just 9 1/3 innings over those two starts. Wainwright has his work cut out for him in this game, as the Cardinals try to take the lead in this four-game series. Eric Lauer has a 3.57 ERA. His 2022 season has been a study in steady regression. He posted a 1.93 ERA in April, a 2.96 ERA in May, and his current June ERA is 6.75. One core problem is home runs. Lauer has allowed six in June, more than he allowed in all of May (5) and twice the amount he allowed in April (3). The other big problem for Lauer is walks. He issued eight walks in his first eight starts but has given up 14 walks in his last seven starts. If he can at least cut down on one of these two central and alarming deficits, Lauer can begin to turn his season around and give the Brewers what they need as these two teams, Milwaukee and St. Louis, duel for the National League Central Division championship.

The Cardinals bounced back from a Monday night loss to the Brewers by winning Tuesday's game. The Cardinals were dominated by Corbin Burnes in their loss to the Brewers. Milwaukee doesn't have another starter who is particularly comparable to its staff ace. The Cardinals scored a bunch of runs on Tuesday. Against Eric Lauer, who has been struggling in recent weeks, the Cardinals should be able to feast once more. Milwaukee has a hitter-friendly ballpark and the Cardinals are loaded with big hitters. This game sets up well for them on offense.
Why The Brewers Could Cover the Spread
If this game sets up well for the Cardinals' offense, it sets up even better for the Brewers' offense. Milwaukee has solved Adam Wainwright this season. You saw the numbers posted above. Getting 18 hits in just over nine innings shows that Brewer hitters see the ball well out of Wainwright's hand. Wainwright will have to pitch at his absolute best to keep Milwaukee in check.
