The San Francisco Giants will square off against the Chicago Cubs on Sunday Night Baseball from the Windy City, concluding their weekend series. With that said, it’s a good time to check out our MLB odds series, which includes a Giants-Cubs prediction and pick, laid out below.

San Francisco has officially been eliminated from the playoffs, and sit with a 66-73 record, third place in the NL West. This team entered the 2022 season with huge aspirations, coming off a 2021 season in which they won 107 games. Instead, San Francisco will spend their fall at home, which could spell trouble for manager Gabe Kapler.

Chicago is also eliminated from the playoffs, with a 58-81 record giving them the third place spot in the NL Central. However, Chicago did not bring high expectations in to the 2022 season, as this is likely the beginning of a rebuilding phase for the club. So, their record is right around what was to be expected.

Why The Giants Could Cover The Spread

San Francisco will go with an opener in this one, sending reliever John Brebbia to the mound in this one. Brebbia will be making his fifth open this season, and his 66th appearance overall. While it likely will not last longer than an inning, Brebbia has been brilliant, with a 2.93 ERA this season. The righty throws a slider over half the time, but it is the fastball that has given hitters fits. Batters are hitting just .195 against Brebbia's fastball. A corresponding bulk guy has not yet been announced, and Sean Hjelle, the likely candidate, is back at Triple-A after throwing five innings of one run ball against Milwaukee on September 8. Jarlin Garcia has gone longer than three outs in a few outings this season, and has pitched to a 3.44 ERA in 55 innings. Closer Camilo Doval is the bright spot in a bad bullpen, with a 2.64 ERA, 21 saves and 69 strikeouts in 58 innings.

Joc Pederson leads the team with 22 home runs, slashing a solid .269/.349/.526. While the offense as a whole has disappointed, there are a few bright spots. Wilmer Flores has provided some defensive versatility, and has hit 17 home runs along with a team-leading 26 doubles. Mike Yastrzemski is also tied for the lead with 26 doubles, adding 12 home runs. In the first extended starting role in his career, Thairo Estrada leads the team with 17 stolen bases, adding 12 home runs. Evan Longoria has launched 12 home runs, while Joey Bart has hit 11 as he continues to turn his season around after a putrid start.

Why The Cubs Could Cover The Spread

Wade Miley, the veteran left-hander, will take the ball for Chicago in this one. Miley returned from a near three month absence earlier in the week, allowing two runs in four innings. Overall, Miley has made five starts this season, with a 3.13 ERA and 18 strikeouts in 23 innings. Miley has consistently provided solid work in his career, and should be a strong veteran presence for Chicago as they put a bow on a disappointing season. Chicago's bullpen was decimated at the trade deadline, leaving Brandon Hughes as the best remaining option. The rookie lefty has pitched to a 3.17 ERA with 61 strikeouts in 48.1 innings.

Chicago's offense was not ravaged at the deadline like the pitching staff, but is still lacking some of their luster from the heights of their contending days. Ian Happ has slashed .274/.346/.456, leading the team with 38 doubles and adding 16 home runs. Patrick Wisdom leads the team with 22 home runs and 51 walks. Catcher Willson Contreras, a surprising keep at the trade deadline, is second with 21 home runs. Nico Hoerner leads the team with a .287 batting average and 18 stolen bases, adding 20 doubles and nine home runs. Rookie Seiya Suzuki has 22 doubles and 12 home runs in his first stateside season. Rookie Christopher Morel has impressed in his 93 games, hitting 13 home runs and stealing nine bases.

Final Giants-Cubs Prediction & Pick

I would not expect much offense in this one.
