The New York Mets take on the San Francisco Giants. Check out our MLB odds series for our Mets Giants prediction and pick.

David Peterson gets the start for the Mets, while Alex Cobb takes the mound for the Giants.

David Peterson has a 1.89 ERA, but before you get too excited about that statistic, remember that it's based on only four starts and only 19 innings pitched. Peterson hasn't pitched past the sixth inning in any of his four starts. It's really hard to know what kind of starting pitcher he will be this season, but he will be asked to help stitch this rotation together in light of the injuries to Jacob deGrom and Max Scherzer. If Peterson can give the Mets five innings and allow no more than two runs, the team will take it for now. It will be interesting if he can develop into a stronger pitcher for the team as the season moves along.

Alex Cobb has a 5.61 ERA. He has had an up-and-down season to this point for the Giants. His ERA rose to 5.40 after his third start, then went down to 3.98 after his next two starts. Then, in his most recent start last week, he was shelled by the Rockies for seven runs in 5 1/3 innings. Notably, that game was in Coors Field, where a lot of pitchers — even the best ones — have rough outings. Is Cobb a victim of Coors who will bounce back here in this game, or is he just a mediocre pitcher who should not be trusted? That's a question to ask when thinking about a Mets Giants prediction.

Why The Mets Could Cover the Spread

The Mets followed the Giants to Coors Field and limited the Rockies to no more than two runs in two of the three games in Denver this past weekend. New York continues to win series consistently, so if you think the Mets are going to win this series in San Francisco, you would naturally pick New York here.

The other big point to make is that the Giants looked terrible over the weekend against the Padres. It's true that San Diego is a very good team, but San Francisco looked largely anemic at the plate and needed a broken-bat single in the ninth inning on Friday to send that game to extra innings. The Padres were clearly the better team over the weekend, and the Giants don't have the strong starting pitching they had last year. Think about that when making a Mets Giants pick.

Alex Cobb is a perfect example of the point made above. He has not been able to find any high-level consistency this season. The Giants' rotation is weaker than it was in 2021, one reason the team is staring up at the Padres and Dodgers in the National League West standings.

Why The Giants Could Cover the Spread

After getting swept by the Padres, the Giants need to regroup. The Mets might be a better team, but the Giants need this game more and are at home, going against a pitcher — David Peterson — who has not pitched a whole lot this season and remains a relative unknown quantity. The Giants were shut down each of the past two days by the Padres. Their bats are due for a breakout against a Mets team which just came from Coors Field as part of a long multi-city Western road trip. This game sets up well for the Giants.

Final Mets-Giants Prediction & Pick

This is a good game to stay away from, but if you feel you need to make a pick, the Giants are in a favorable spot here, knowing they need to hit the reset button against a Mets team which might be a little tired from travel and from a cold weekend in Denver against the Rockies.

Final Mets-Giants Prediction & Pick: Giants -1.5
