Complacency is a contender's worst enemy. The Atlanta Braves might be leading the National League right now by a wide margin, but that doesn't mean they get to sit on their laurels. Their bullpen is usually solid despite the many injuries, but you never know when you might need to adjust due to an injury. Because of that, the Braves are trading for former Rockies and Padres righty Pierce Johnson, per Mark Feinsand.
“The Rockies have traded RHP Pierce Johnson to the Braves for a pair of minor leaguers, per source.”
The Braves' bullpen has been reduced to rubble over the course of the season. With guys like AJ Minter, Jesse Chavez, and Dylan Lee still on the mend, Atlanta is light on relief arms. They've been able to hold their own so far, but the last few games have been pretty rough for them. They had an insane 16-13 loss to the Diamondbacks a few days ago.
Adding another arm to their bullpen should help alleviate some of their bullpen issues as their main arms are on the mend. Johnson currently sports an ERA of 6.00 over the course of the season, but the hope is that the Braves' staff and their elite defense could compensate for these issues. Plus, Johnson played for the Rockies, who play in a notoriously hitter-friendly stadium.
It's not just the bullpen that's been having injury woes. The starting rotation is also down two of its best pitchers, with Max Fried and Kyle Wright still on the 60-day injured list. The Braves have a huge cushion to work with, but can they finish strong and end the season still on top of the NL (or at least their division.
