The Atlanta Braves have called up right-handed pitcher Mike Foltynewicz from Triple-A Gwinnett on the heels of fellow righty Kevin Gausman being claimed off waivers, according to the team.
Foltynewicz will take Gausman's spot on the active roster and will start on Tuesday night against the Minnesota Twins.
The 27-year-old has made 11 starts with the Braves this season, going 2-5 with a 6.37 ERA while allowing 64 hits and striking out 50 batters over 59.1 innings of work. He began the year on the injured list due to elbow soreness.
He has made 10 starts at Triple-A, going 5-1 with a 3.86 ERA, surrendering 49 hits and fanning 45 hitters across 51.1 frames of action.
Foltynewicz's struggles come a year after he had the best season of his career, when he went 13-10 with a 2.85 ERA while giving up 130 hits and registering 202 punchouts through 183 innings, making the All-Star team as a result.
The Sterling, Il. native was originally selected by the Houston Astros with the 19th overall pick of the 2010 MLB Draft and made his big-league debut with the Astros in 2014, going 0-1 with a 5.30 ERA over 16 relief outings.
Houston then proceeded to trade Foltynewicz to the Braves in January 2015, and that ensuing season, he went on to make 18 appearances and 15 starts for Atlanta, going 4-6 with a 5.71 ERA.
His struggles continued in 2016 and 2017, as he logged ERAs of 4.31 and 4.79, respectively, before finally breaking out in 2018.
The Braves currently own a record of 66-47 and are six games up on the Philadelphia Phillies in the loss column for first place in the NL East. Atlanta is aiming to win back-to-back division titles for the first time since 2005.
