Mookie Betts is enjoying a stellar season in Los Angeles with the Dodgers. Now in his third season with LA, the former Red Sox star opened up on the trade from Boston via an interview with WEEI.com. In the interview, Betts wanted to make clear that the trade was not a result of him not wanting to be in Boston. The Dodgers star admitted that his tenure with the Red Sox was the “best time of his life.”
Via the “Bradfo-Sho” podcast with WEEI's Rob Bradford, Betts was adamant that he had nothing but love for Boston.
“I just don’t want anybody, especially when I go back, man, I don’t want it to be like it was hatred or I didn’t want to be there,” said Betts. “I loved everybody in Boston. I loved it. That was the best time of my life. Obviously, it’s a new chapter now and I’ve got to live where my feet are, but I’ll never forget all those memories, all those fans, and all the things I did in Boston, all the people, that was my life. It’s something I’ll never forget.”
Betts is now in his third season with the Dodgers after being acquired in a blockbuster trade ahead of the 2020 MLB campaign. The Red Sox trade Betts to LA, alongside David Price, in exchange for Alex Verdugo, Jeter Downs, and Connor Wong.
Just because his days in Beantown are behind him, doesn't mean the city of Boston doesn't hold a special place in Betts' heart. After all, he started off his prolific career in the outfield grass at Fenway Park, making four All-Star appearances and winning the 2018 AL MVP during his tenure with the team.
This year, Betts is slashing .302/.381/.586 with 16 home runs and 39 RBI across 53 games and looks like a candidate to win the NL MVP.
