Rafael Devers isn't the only one currently at an impasse when it comes to contract negotiations with the Boston Red Sox. Star shortstop Xander Bogaerts told Bob Nightengale Thursday that he won't be signing a new contract with the Red Sox before Opening Day. This is worrisome for the Red Sox considering the shortstop is able to opt out of his contract after this season and hit free agency.

In 2019, Bogaerts and the Red Sox agreed to terms on a six-year, $120 million contract. That deal, however, featured opt-out clauses each year after the 2022 season. It's widely assumed that Bogaerts is planning to opt out of his current deal after this season in order to get a new contract that better reflects his current value, though the shortstop hasn't said as much.

Bogaerts is just 29 years old and has emerged as one of baseball's best shortstops, despite the multitude of talent at the position across the league. Last year in Boston, Bogey slashed .295/.370/.493 with 23 home runs, 79 RBI, and 156 hits across 144 games. He made the third All-Star Game of his career and won his fourth Silver Slugger in what was another excellent campaign for the eight-year veteran in 2021.
