The Chicago Cubs overhauled the roster at the trade deadline last season, watching various key pieces walk in free agency. They've managed to re-tool fairly well in free agency thus far, landing deals for Marcus Stroman, Japanese phenom Seiya Suzuki, and veteran infielder Jonathan Villar. They continued to add some veteran presence on Thursday, and may have found their potential closer for the 2022 season in doing so. According to ESPN's Jesse Rogers, the Cubs have agreed to a one-year deal with free-agent reliever Mychal Givens.

The one-year deal is reportedly worth $5 million and could rise to $6.25 million through incentives. With the Cubs in need of a reliable arm to anchor the bullpen, Givens could step up and be that guy.

He has experience as an MLB closer in the past, having logged 20 saves across six seasons with the Orioles, all of which came between 2019 and 2020. While he's never served as a bullpen's closer a full season, he has the chance to claim the role for his own in Chicago.

Last year, Givens spent time with the Colorado Rockies and Cincinnati Reds, having been dealt to Cincy at the trade deadline. Across 54 total relief appearances in 2021, Givens recorded a 3.35 ERA with 54 strikeouts across 51.0 innings. He logged 8 saves last season for the Reds, and finished 22 games throughout the season.

After a strong year last season, the Cubs are rewarding Givens with the chance to prove himself as a full-time closer in the league, and the 31-year-old will surely be hoping to make the most of his newest opportunity in MLB.
