The Angels were not sure what to expect when they signed Noah Syndergaard during the offseason. The pitcher commonly referred to as “Thor” had dealt with a number of injury problems in his latter Mets years. However, the Angels desperately needed pitching and Syndergaard’s upside was worth the risk.

And he displayed every bit of that upside on Tuesday night against the Rangers.

He pitched 8 innings of 1-run ball while striking out 5 and walking none. It was the kind of outing that was reminiscent of his younger days. Except, Syndergaard was a different kind of exceptional in this game.

He consistently lived in the high 90’s and even got up to 100 MPH with the Mets. He was also wild at times and rarely pitched deep into games.

Syndergaard’s decrease in velocity following Tommy John surgery could be a blessing in disguise for the Angels. He painted the corners all night and relied on command rather than inconsistent velocity. And as a result, the right-hander spun 8 impressive innings.

Syndergaard commented on his effort following the game

“Just trying to put a chip on my shoulder and just kind of pitch with a little bit of attitude tonight,” Syndergaard said. “I was just in attack mode the whole game.”

He also declared the return of Thor on Twitter.

This post is bound to pump up Angels fans. Noah Syndergaard will be a key piece to the puzzle for the Angels moving forward this season as they look to make the playoffs for the first time since 2014
