Emmet Sheehan did not have a very good weekend, as he got lit up on the mound by the Texas Rangers in an 8-4 Los Angeles Dodgers loss in Arlington Sunday. For Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, part of the reason for the rookie pitcher's forgettable start was tentativeness on the part of the 23-year-old right-hander.
“I see 92 (mps) on the radar gun, that shows me he’s being tentative, aiming the baseball and not being free and easy and attacking,” Roberts said of Sheehan after the game, per the Associated Press (h/t ESPN). “You see a lot of noncompetitive pitches.”
Against the Rangers, Sheehan gave up a total of eight earned runs on eight hits in just 3.2 innings of action on the mound. His location was all over, as evidenced by the fact that he also issued five free passes to the Rangers. So far in the 2023 MLB regular season, Sheehan has a 6.75 ERA and 1.47 WHIP, though, he is still sporting a winning 3-1 record through six starts. The Dodgers simply just couldn't come up with enough runs in the Rangers game to save Sheehan from incurring his first pitching loss of the season.
Sheehan can just view that disastrous start as part of his learning curve in the big leagues. As for the Dodgers, they are still looking fine with a 57-41 record, though, they are just four games ahead of the Arizona Diamondbacks and the San Francisco Giants atop the National League West division.
Up next for the Dodgers is a three-game home series against the Toronto Blue Jays which kicks off Monday night.
