With the addition of veteran first baseman Freddie Freeman, Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts will now have a multitude of lineup options for the upcoming season.

Among the routes that Roberts can take for his go-to lineup this year centers on featuring Mookie Betts and Freeman at the top two spots in the batting order respectively, while also slotting in Trea Turner behind them. For the moment, this lineup arrangement is one that he is currently siding with the most.

“It’s not set in stone but it’s certainly the way I’m thinking right now,” Roberts on Friday. “I think that just Mookie’s comfort level to get the lineup going, to hit at the top, Trea’s ability to drive runs in, to get on base, his openness, and then also I think that Freddie in between those guys I think is important – to have the right-left-right-left potentially with Max Muncy right there it just poses a lot of problems for opposing teams.”

At the least, Betts is on track to bat leadoff.

“I think that they’re interchangeable as far as first second, third, with Freddie obviously mixed in there,” Roberts said. “Mookie feels considerably more comfortable in the one. For Trea to be open to either – and they both are – but I just think that if I could flip a coin to say which one should hit leadoff and then one feels a little bit more comfortable I think that wins out. So I see Mookie in the one.”

Betts was the Dodgers’ go-to leadoff hitter in the 2021 campaign, as he logged 104 starts at the top of the batting order. Leadoff hitters are simply called upon to get on base, and the versatile outfielder did just that; he posted a .370 on-base percentage in such appearances last season.

Freeman moving into the No. 2 hole in the Dodgers lineup would not be much of a drastic change for him at this stage in his career. For one, he notched 90 starts batting second in what turned out to be his final season with the Atlanta Braves. And upon his arrival with the Dodgers, Turner often featured at the No. 3 spot in the batting order, although Justin Turner (93) led the team in such starts last season.

A crucial campaign awaits the Dodgers in the 2022 season.
