On Tuesday, the MLB and the Player's Union were unable to come to an agreement ending the lockout. The self-imposed deadline of 5pm ET passed and thus regular season games have already been canceled. MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred then revealed his official statement, detailing exactly what the league tried to change, as well as what went wrong.

The MLB Commissioner opened his statement pointing out that the lack of an agreement was not due a lack of effort. Both sides worked tirelessly to come together and try to avoid this shutdown.

Manfred then went into specifics, pointing to where the MLB owners tried to give in, as noted by MLB.

“A primary goal of the Players Association has been to increase pay for younger players… We offered to raise the minimum salary to $700,000, an increase of $130,000 from 2021. We offered to create an annual bonus pool of $30 million for the very best young players. In total, we are offering a 33% raise to nearly two-thirds of Major League players and adding more than $100 million annually in additional compensation for younger players.”

He also touched on the issue of free agency, a draft lottery and expanded playoffs. However, this of course is only one side of the argument. The players clearly did not feel as though they were getting an even shake.
