Juan Soto reportedly turned down a massive 15-year, $440 million extension with the Washington Nationals. And that rejection likely placed him on the trade market, with the San Francisco Giants as a possible destination.

Rumors have swirled as to where the 23-year-old may end up. There are teams who have the capital to trade for Soto. Not all of those teams can give out the type of contract he will demand, however.

One team who may be able to do both is the Giants. San Francisco certainly would be better with the former World Series champion. The Giants sit in third place in the National League West with a 48-43 record.

However, not everyone is overly excited about a move for Soto. Speaking with NBC Sports Bay Area, former Giants pitcher Matt Cain said the team should exercise caution with this type of move.

“Yeah it would be great, but they've also gotta be thinking a little bit down the road as well,” Cain said. “What are they going to have to do to be able to get a player like that? Is he just going to be a rental player for the half of the year and what does it look like down the road?”

The former Giants pitcher drew on his personal experience when making this point. The 37-year-old was with the Giants during their run of three World Series titles from 2010 to 2015.

“It is definitely a boost like when we got Hunter [Pence], that was amazing,” Cain said. “Then there's other times where we got [Carlos] Beltran and it didn't pan out and it wasn't for his lack of production, it was that it just didn't pan out. It's always a tough one to be able to say hey just because you go get a guy like a Soto, is that going to change everything? I think it's still a coin toss.”

Whether Juan Soto is dealt by the August 2nd trade deadline remains to be seen. Discussion around Soto's future doesn't seem likely to die down soon. Only time will tell if the Giants pursue the superstar.
