The San Francisco Giants were dealt a potentially brutal blow during the first game of their doubleheader against the New York Mets on Tuesday. Starting pitcher Alex Cobb was removed from the game after retiring one batter in the fifth inning, escorted to the dugout by Giants' head athletic trainer Dave Groeschner, per Andrew Baggarly. It's unclear what the cause of his early removal from the game was, but it's certainly worrisome for the team.

Cobb had been struggling throughout his start against the Mets, and it appears he may have been dealing with discomfort. Across 4.1 innings, Cobb surrendered 6 hits, 4 runs, 3 earned runs, and struck out 4 batters. He managed just 60 pitches on the evening, throwing 42 strikes before his evening came to an early end.

Dominic Leone was called upon to replace him on the mound and finish out the fifth inning.

Cobb's first start with the Giants this season was terrific. He earned a win against the San Diego Padres, recording 10 strikeouts and surrendering 4 hits, 2 earned runs, and 2 walks. The 34-year-old was hoping to build off of that start but unfortunately appears to have come down with some sort of ailment.

The Giants will likely send him in for tests and provide an update later on.

Cobb signed a two-year, $20 million deal with the Giants this offseason, which also features a club option for 2024. Last year with the Angels, the right-hander started 18 games, striking out 98 batters in 93.1 innings and recording a 3.76 ERA in what was his best season since 2017 when he was with the Tampa Bay Rays.
