There is a 50/50 chance that the Seattle Mariners trade right-hander Mike Leake before his start against the Texas Rangers on Tuesday night, according to Jon Morosi of MLB.com.
Through 21 starts this season, Leake has gone 9-8 with a 4.25 ERA while allowing 143 hits and striking out 98 batters over 131.1 innings of work.
The 31-year-old made his big-league debut with the Cincinnati Reds back in 2010, going 8-4 with a 4.24 ERA while surrendering 158 hits and fanning 91 hitters across 138.1 frames of action.
Leake went on to spend the first five-and-a-half years of his career with the Reds and developed into a reliable starter, breaking out in 2013 when he went 14-7 with a 3.37 ERA while giving up 193 hits and registering 122 punch-outs through 192.1 innings.
He was traded to the San Francisco Giants midway through the 2015 campaign and spent half of a season with the Giants before signing with the St. Louis Cardinals in free agency that ensuing offseason.
However, Leake was a major disappointment for the Cardinals, pitching to the tune of a 4.69 ERA in 2016 and then logging a 4.21 ERA through 26 starts in 2017 before being traded to the Mariners in August of that year.
Leake has been in Seattle ever since, and last season, he went 10-10 with a 4.36 ERA, permitting 207 hits and recording 119 strikeouts over 185.2 innings.
The San Diego native has gone 102-95 with a 4.04 ERA across 290 lifetime appearances, totaling 1,202 strikeouts through 1,763.1 innings. While his numbers aren't fantastic, they aren't bad, and he is durable.
With the Mariners sitting at 46-63 and clearly out of playoff contention, trading away Leake ahead of the Wednesday trade deadline would certainly make sense.
