At one point during the early stages of the 2022 MLB season, it seemed as if the Seattle Mariners were going to end up being sellers at this year’s trade deadline. However, much has changed for Seattle as of late.

The Mariners have reeled off 12 wins in a row and currently hold the second wild-card spot in the American League thanks to their 49-42 record. Still, they have ways to go to catch the Houston Astros for the top spot in the AL West standings, as they trail the reigning AL champions by 10.0 games.

The New York Post’s Jon Heyman shared multiple updates regarding trade rumors ahead of the Aug. 2 deadline. For one, he listed several players who could fit the bill for the New York Mets’ need for a designated hitter. Among such players who he mentioned was Mariners right fielder Mitch Haniger.

Heyman added that the Mariners “aren’t likely to be sellers,” although the team “may move him.”

Haniger has played in a mere nine games so far in the campaign. He missed time in April after being placed on the COVID-19 injured list, and in his first game back against the Miami Marlins in an April 29 road contest, he wound up suffering a Grade 2 right high-ankle sprain injury. He was subsequently placed on the 10-day injured list and was then moved to the 60-day IL last month.

At the least, Haniger has been featuring in running activities as of late, and he reportedly could return to action later in the month after he ends up taking part in a rehab assignment.

In Haniger’s absence, eight different players have earned at least one start out at right field for the Mariners this season. It will be noteworthy to see on the Mariners’ Plan B for the position should they opt to soon ship off Haniger, who is set to become a free agent later this year. While the Mariners may not have a realistic chance at catching the Astros atop the AL West standings, they are still very well in the driver's seat of possibly snapping their lengthy playoff drought later in the campaign.
