Rumors have flown around the last few days that former Manchester United star Wayne Rooney was keen on returning to DC United. Now, it seems, the reunion is going to happen.

The Athletic is reporting that Rooney has agreed to become the new manager of DC United. The Athletic did not disclose the terms of the deal.

Rooney first came to the American outfit in 2018 when he left his boyhood club, Everton. The 36-year-old captained the side and made 48 appearances before cutting his contract short in 2019.

Rooney played most of his football at Manchester United. He made 393 appearances for Sir Alex Ferguson's side, scoring 183 goals and winning five Premier League titles from 2004 to 2017.

After cutting his deal short with DC United, Rooney moved to Derby County as a player coach. He was appointed the permanent manager of the Rams in January 2021 and retired from playing.

The 36-year-old's spell as Derby manager was mired in struggles and club issues. Rooney took over a squad that was battling relegation to EFL League One, but he was able to pull off the escape and keep the club in the EFL Championship.

The club, however, went into administration this past September. The EFL handed the Rams a 21-point deduction, and while the club finished on 34 points, the club couldn't escape relegation to League One. Rooney stepped down in late June.

“My time at the club has been a rollercoaster of emotions, both highs and lows, but I have to say that I have enjoyed the challenge,” Rooney said in a statement following his resignation.

On July 1, the Rams came out of administration when Property developer David Clowes bought the club and Pride Park.

While DC United doesn't face the same struggles as Derby, Rooney's job will be a challenge. United is 13th in the Eastern Conference. And the club is fresh off of the club's most lopsided loss ever. They were on the losing end of 7-0 demolition job at the hands of the Philadelphia Union.
