The Colorado Avalanche are enjoying another stellar regular season. Tuesday night, the Avalanche travel to Calgary to face off against the Pacific Division leading Flames. With hopes of the President's Trophy in sight, every win is crucial for Colorado. But it's going to be more difficult to attain Tuesday as news revealed that Avalanche star center Nathan MacKinnon is going to miss the game.

MacKinnon is reportedly dealing with an upper body injury, noted by NHL.com.

On Sunday night, The Avalanche superstar got into a fight with Minnesota Wild defenseman Matt Dumba. After the game, there was concern about MacKinnon's hand being hurt in the fight. Colorado head coach Jared Bednar discussed MacKinnon's status after the morning skate. “He's out. Gone back to Denver for evaluation,” Bednar said. “He'll land in Denver and then he'll start seeing our docs.”

It's a tough blow for the Avalanche if MacKinnon misses extended time. He is fourth on the team with 70 points, but has played 12 fewer games that the teammates ahead of him this season. MacKinnon leads the team with 241 shots on goal, and provides that veteran leadership needed for a championship run.

The Avalanche have been hockey's best team all season. But the Florida Panthers and Carolina Hurricanes in the eastern conference have been clipping on their heels for best record in the NHL. Tuesday, Colorado plays a huge game against the Flames. Calgary is still clinging to hope they can surpass the Avalanche for home-ice advantage in the playoffs.

Things certainly got more difficult with the news on MacKinnon.
