The Atlanta Hawks have already become big winners after landing the third overall selection in this year's NBA Draft, but now comes the ambition of drafting the best available player.

While European wonder Luka Doncic has been largely considered a top-two selection, the Hawks would have to consider the potential of him sliding to them at No. 3 come mid-June.

Hawks general manager Travis Schlenk explored conversations with Doncic's agent, Bill Duffy, but he's remained relatively quiet about a potential mutual interest.

“I had a chance to sit down with his agent last week in Chicago and try to get a read on the situation, and his agent obviously was flying over to the (EuroLeague) Final Four in Belgrade. He’ll get back to the States this weekend and we’re going to circle back with him,” said Schlenk during an interview with 92.9 The Game in Atlanta as the Hawks intend to “get a read” on Doncic’s status, according to KL Chouinard of Hawks.com.

While at the moment, it seems like it's DeAndre Ayton and Doncic as the solidified elite of this NBA Draft class, many things could take place in the span of a month. Yet one thing remains unchanged — Doncic's accolades are unprecedented.

”What he has been able to accomplish in Europe, we’ve never seen before,” said Schlenk. “A 19-year-old kid who has been MVP of the Final Four, MVP of EuroLeague, won a European Championship — what he has been able to accomplish at his age has never been duplicated over there.

He has got really good size at 6’8. He has got really good court vision with his ability to pass the ball. He is a good shooter, not a great shooter, but that’s one thing guys get better at with a lot of repetition, and obviously in the NBA, you get nothing but repetition. His body, his frame, he has got a good frame and he has got the ability to add good weight.

He is certainly an intriguing prospect and, with his basketball IQ and his ability to make his teammates better for his age and just his maturity on the court, it’s really impressive.”

Despite not being present for the NBA Draft Combine, this hasn't stopped front offices from becoming enamored with the Real Madrid standout — having shown his mettle in several years of professional competition in Europe and in some of the biggest stages.

Doncic helped his native Slovenia and countryman Goran Dragic to a first-ever gold medal at the EuroBasket tournament last year, now making another appearance in the world spotlight by taking part in the Final Four after earning Euroleague MVP honors.
