With uncertainty surrounding the upcoming NBA season, commissioner Adam Silver was able to mention some good news on Monday during an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle. While not only the sports world, but the nation itself has been deeply affected by COVID-19, Silver expressed his confident belief that fans may be able to enter arenas during the 2020-21 season–partially due to rapid testing for COVID-19.

“I do think it's realistic,” Adam Silver said in response to being asked about the possibility of fans being able to enter the arenas at some point. “This is an area that Joe [Lacob] in particular has been involved in, in terms of the rapid-testing market. As a league, even since mid-March when we shut down, we have been intensively researching and testing all sorts of testing in the public sector and private sector. There have been significant advancements in rapid testing since the onset of COVID-19. We're fairly optimistic that the market will generate more and better forms of faster testing.

While the rapid testing of fans will bring back a much needed presence to games, it'll also help the league from a financial standpoint in terms of gaining back some much-needed revenue with the projected loss that's at stake. Adam Silver, however, states that the allowance of rapid testing would expand into a greater good for the entire community.

“For example, if a person attending a Warriors game gets tested,” Adam Silver continued. “There's also a benefit to the larger community and potentially that person's employer, both to keep them healthy and because they may be going to a workplace. It's not necessarily a one-purpose test.”

Adam Silver and the Board of Governors will continue to work diligently with the NBPA.
