USA Basketball Director Jerry Colangelo confirmed via ESPN that the team never considered bringing former NBA star Carmelo Anthony to the World Cup roster this year.

Anthony is one of the most decorated USA basketball athletes of all time. Over his career, he has won a total of six medals with the United States, four of them gold.

Most recently, Anthony won a gold medal with the team during the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

With plenty of NBA stars choosing to drop out from USA Basketball this year due to the anticipation of a highly competitive 2019-20 NBA regular season, Team USA will not field a formidable roster as they did in the past.

Many thought that Anthony would have a legitimate shot of taking one of the vacated spots, but Colangelo claims he was never even considered.

Colangelo isn't the only one rejecting an Anthony return to professional basketball. The regular season is just over two months away, but Anthony remains a free agent.

Recently, the former scoring champ and 10-time All-Star spoke about the struggle he was going through to find a new team. It seems like he is ready to embrace any role on whatever team that will take a chance on him.

Hopefully, we haven't seen the last of Carmelo Anthony in professional basketball. Maybe a team will swoop up the veteran at the last second and bet on the fact that he has some gas left in the tank.
