Howard, of course, was famously a member of the vaunted “Fab Five,” Michigan team that captured national attention for its influential in-your-face play style and collection of vaunted recruits. Other than Howard, the team featured Jalen Rose, Chris Webber, Jimmy King, and Ray Jackson. The team was influential, successful and popular – a rare combination for any team.
After winning a championship as a player with the Miami Heat in 2012 after 19 seasons in the NBA, Howard moved on as an assistant coach under Erik Spoelstra after his retirement from playing in the 2012-13 season. With Howard slated to become the Michigan head man, two of his most notable former teammates and players that played under him as an assistant have come out in staunch support of the NBA veteran and Michigan legend. First, Dwyane Wade Tweeted out congratulations for Howard:
Talk to me nice. Say it is so!!!? My guy deserves this opportunity. This will only be right https://t.co/TWWH4UuiTZ

Then, his friend and former teammate LeBron James chimed in with support of his own:
Man WHAT!!!!?? Absolutely the right choice and i hope it becomes a done deal ASAP!! One of my favorite people I’ve ever met at the age of 16 and been around since then. 🙏🏾 https://t.co/hdmF60odnm

Both players seem fairly inspired by the decision to bring Howard in as Michigan head coach, and he will join a wave of former college players that have had long NBA careers to join the college coaching ranks of late such as Patrick Ewing, Penny Hardaway, Jerry Stackhouse and Chris Mullin (among many more).
Howard will likely have a long way to go before he can turn Michigan into the powerhouse it frequently was under offensive maestro John Beilein, but he will surely have the fans on his side to start his tenure.
