Former NBA Commissioner David Stern suddenly passed away from complications following a brain hemorrhage he suffered three weeks ago. His passing was sent shock wave through American sports, and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell made sure that his fellow sporting executive received the send-off he deserves.

Liz Mullen of SBJ shared the full statement from the NFL that paid tribute to one of the most influential sporting authorities in American sports history.

It was high praise from Goodell, the head figure of the biggest sporting league in the United States, to call Stern a driving force. However, what makes it all the more impressive was what he said after that gracious comment for the former NBA commissioner.

“I called him the dean of commissioners, not only for his longevity and his vision for the NBA, but for his willingness to offer advice when I first started as NFL commissioner,” Goodell said in his statement.

David Stern, who steered the NBA ship for almost three decades, is widely considered as one of the primary reasons for the league’s growth into a global brand that is beloved by millions around the world. He helped the league foster the identity of being outspoken and supportive regarding relevant societal issues.

LeBron James himself thinks that there should be a tribute for his impact in the game.

“He definitely should have something named after him,” James said following the Lakers’ 117-107 win over the Phoenix Suns on Wednesday, via USA Today. “Either if it’s an award, or, I don’t know, a day? During the course of an NBA season, there’s a ‘David Stern Day.’ I don’t know. We can figure it out.”

Stern is survived by his wife, Dianne, and their sons, Andrew and Eric.
