Current NBA Commissioner Adam Silver as the next head honcho of the NFL? We say, don’t bet on it. According to a report by ESPN’s Don Van Natta Jr. and Seth Wickersham, Silver himself shut down the idea of him inheriting the office of incumbent NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.

The owners, though, have considered other successors. A confidant of one owner reached out to gauge whether Adam Silver, the NBA commissioner, would be interested in running the NFL, to which Silver immediately said no.

The NFL has been a petri dish of controversies of late (when have they not been a hotbed of issues?), as the league currently finds itself embroiled in a high-profile dilemma of whether to extend NFL Commissioner Goodell’s contract or not.

However, there are plenty of rumors swirling that several NFL team owners are not particularly keen on the idea of prolonging Goodell’s reign as the league’s top executive. Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has been the biggest figure opposing Goodell’s extension, and it is becoming clear that he’s getting more and more support as the commissioner’s contract talks intensify.

Seen from a different angle, it’s not a surprise that Silver’s name has been brought up in discussing possible replacements for Goodell. Of the four commissioners of the four major pro sports in North America, Silver arguably has the cleanest image and enjoys strong support from within his league and its fans that someone like Gary Bettman of the NHL would be very envious of.

Goodell’s contract will expire at the end of 2018, but the idea of running the NFL appears to weigh less for Silver than his commitment to steer the NBA to new heights.
